The untouched Béarn region in southwestern
France is truly entre nous (just between us)

bordered by the Basque provinces, Soule and Lower
Navarre to the west, Gascony to the north, Bigorre to
the east, and the Spanish border to the south. Along with
the three Basque provinces of Soule, Lower Navarre,
and Labourd, and small parts of Gascony, it forms the
département of Pyrénées-Atlantiques. Pau was the former capital of Béarn. Dating back to the 11th century, Pau was not only the seat of the viscounts of Béarn, but also the residence of the kings of Navarre. It was the birthplace of Henry IV of France who, when leaving Pau to become King of France, famously remarked that he was, “not giving Béarn to France, he was giving France to Béarn.” A particularly interesting region is the historic market town of Oloron Sainte Marie, which attracts both a national and an international clientele. The charming town is ideally located only an hour from both the mountains and the sea, and offers excellent salmon and trout fishing in the two local rivers.
